About Bandhavgarh National Park

Park History and Other Information

Did you know there is a connection between Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve and the Ramayana?
This park derives its name from the most prominent hill in the area, which is believed to have been gifted by Lord Rama to his younger brother Lakhmana after he returned from Lanka after killing Ravana on the way to Ayodhya. ‘Bandhav’ in English means brother, and ‘Garh’ means fort, resulting in ‘Brother Fort’.

Bandhavgarh National Park is a national park in India, located in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh, with a variety of biodiversity. The national park is divided into three main zones: Tala, Magdhi, and Khitauli. In terms of biodiversity, Tala is the richest zone, especially for tigers. Bandhavgarh National Park was reintroduced with gaurs after a disease passed from cattle to them, resulting in their deaths.

Bandhavgarh stands among the most regarded national parks, preferably for tiger tours and tiger safaris. Bengal tigers are one of the biggest attractions in this national park. Bandhavgarh has one of the highest densities of tigers known in the world; it is so high that there is a saying that goes: “In any other Park, you are lucky if you see a tiger. In Bandhavgarh, you are unlucky if you don’t see one”.
